The Best Christmas TV Specials and Movies, #5

Posted by GoGo Goodie on November 25, 2011.

As promised, we are breaking into the bottom half of our countdown for the Best Christmas specials and movies.  Now that Thanksgiving is over and I did a little Black Friday shopping for stocking stuffers, I can get back to the next feature on our list.  We are up to number 5 in our countdown and it's another classic by Rankin / Bass ;

Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolf was the first Christmas special produced by Rankin/Bass back in 1964.  It is one of four Christmas specials from the 60's that still airs today at least once every holiday season.  The others are How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Frosty the Snowman, all which can be found in our countdown!  Burl Ives, don't you just love his voice, narrates the story of the outcast reindeer as Sam the Snowman.  Along our journey we meet the characters in the island of misfit toys and the Abominable Snow Monster of the North.  In the original version toys on the island of misfit toys remained there, due to defects the toys were unwanted.  Many people complained and felt that santa would never leave the unwanted toys on the island, so the special was reworked to include a scene of Santa picking up the toys.

Just writing this blog and remembering all the endearing characters makes me look forward to watching it again this December.  Sharing these Christmas specials with the kids is a wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit!  Thanks again for stopping by GoGo Goodie and stay tuned for the rest of the countdown....
