Since Groundhog day is a celebration and here at GoGo Goodie we love any occasion to celebrate, I wanted to learn a little more about it.  Growing up, everyone at least had heard about Groundhog Day.  But, our knowledge was pretty much limited to knowing it had something to do with a groundhog, a shadow and the arrival of spring.  Today, I'll shed some light on the background of Groundhog day...eliminating the shadow, sorry I had to say it!

Gather the kids and watch it live here on February 2nd at sunrise in Pennsylvania!

Groundhog day is celebrated on February 2nd in both the United States and Canada. The tradition grew out of an old German belief that, if on February 2nd, a hibernating animal casts a shadow, then winter will last another 6 weeks.  Spring will arrive early if no shadow is cast.  The earliest settlers to Pennsylvania were Germans and they brought their beliefs and superstitions with them.  They determined that the abundant and wise Groundhog was the a perfect animal to predict the end of winter.

It is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania that the Groundhog celebration and tradition is strongest.  Every year, in a traditional ceremony, they present "Punxsutawney Phil", a real groundhog, to a eager crowd at sunrise on February 2nd.  The hoards of locals, tourists and journalist eagerly await the "decision" Phil makes about the duration of winter.  It is a true celebration leading up to February 2nd and throughout the day.  The Pennsylvanian German dialect is spoken and anyone speaking English pays up to a quarter in penalties...although I would think that is hard to enforce!

If you're want to have fun with Groundhog Day, make a night out of it and eat some good German stew while watching the 1993 movie Groundhog Day.  It's a fun way to introduce the tradition to the family.

Thanks for stopping by GoGo Goodie, your Goodie Bag headquarters!  Here's to hoping Phil doesn't cast a shadow tomorrow!
